Retainer Care 101

Posted on 2/10/2015 by Truman Nielsen
Retainer care after your braces come off! The day has finally arrived - your braces are off! Now you have a retainer, which probably seems much easier to deal with because it is easily removed from your mouth while you enjoy your favorite foods. If you are not careful though, that retainer can cause just as many problems, if not more than braces if you do not properly care for it. The steps are simple and as long as you keep up with them, you can ensure straight and healthy teeth for many years to come. While we don't provide direct orthodontic services here at Fawson Dentistry, we work with several great orthodontic practices in the area and have seen the amazing smile results!

Caring For Your Retainer

Brush your retainer - If you think about the number of germs that are in your mouth that you try to brush away with your toothbrush, you will understand the importance of also brushing your retainer. Because your retainer is in your mouth a good portion of the day, it likely contains just as many germs as are in your mouth. A thorough cleaning with the toothbrush will get rid of them.

Be Careful Where You Store Your Retainer - If you are going to be removing your retainer to eat or brush your teeth, you need to have a safe place to store it. Because it can harbor thousands of germs, you do not want to place it out in the open or in your pocket where dirt and debris can accumulate on it. When you place it back in your mouth, you will be putting those germs in direct contact with your mouth.

Listen to the instructions - Your orthodontist will provide you with instructions on how often you should wear your retainer as well as the circumstances that it should be removed. It is very important that you follow these instructions to ensure that your retainer stays in good condition and that your teeth remain in the position that they worked so hard to get into when you had braces.
