Long Summer Days Means Keeping Your Teeth Clean on the Go

Posted on 5/5/2015 by Truman Nielsen
A woman holding a piece of sugar free chewing gum.Summer is approaching and this often means more traveling for many of us. When we are traveling by road, car or rail, it often plays havoc with our daily routines.

It is still important to keep our gums and teeth clean, no matter what we are doing this busy summer, whether it is going to the beach or going fishing.

To keep your teeth in top shape, we recommend that you follow these six easy tips:

#1 Purchase Travel-Sized Dental Products
All of us are supposed to pitch our toothbrush every 90 days, so summer travels is a good excuse to toss your brush in the trash. While you are traveling, you can buy a small, travel-sized brush and toothpaste. Keep them in a carry-on bag on the plane, and take them out for a quick brush when you are near your destination.

You also may purchase a small bottle of mouthwash and dental floss so you do not miss any part of your daily dental routine.

#2 Use Sugar Free Gum
Chewing sugar free gum is a fantastic way to increase the flow of saliva in your mouth. Remember, saliva is your mouth's natural cleaner. Saliva keeps the teeth moist and clean, helping to reduce chances of tooth decay.

Some mint-flavored sugar free gum is a good way to freshen your mouth after a meal on the road, and helps to clean your teeth without brushing. This can be very useful when you are not near a good supply of water.

#3 Check Water
Depending on where you are going this summer, you may want to avoid drinking or brushing with the tap water. We recommend that in this case that you brush with bottle water to keep your mouth and digestive tract in the best shape. Not much water is needed to rinse out your mouth and to clean your brush. A 16 ounce bottle of water can really go a long way when you are on the road.

#4 Snack Wisely
Summer trips can be full of junk food that is tough on the teeth. We know that a Milky Way and a bag of Skittles may hit the spot when you are trying to stay awake on the road, but it can lead to dental problems. It also can be hard to clean all that gunk off your teeth when time is precious.

Try to make extra space in your bags for some healthy snacks on the go. Maybe stock a little cooler with carrots, apples, celery and other crunchy vegetables that are healthy; those crunchy veggies also are helpful to cleanse the teeth when you are on the road.
Another good option for a teeth-cleaning snack is hard cheese, which as you chew it releases calcium. This mixes with the plaque in your mouth and prevents acid from developing, which can harm teeth.

#5 Try Some Tea
As you are traveling and wanting coffee, try a cup of hot tea instead. Did you know that tea can inhibit the development of bacteria in your mouth? It also can block the production of sugars in your mouth that may cause tooth decay. And by the way, tea also is high in fluoride!

#6 Drink Water
Try to drink a glass of water every few hours when you are traveling. Water will help to keep everything working in your digestive tract, and it also will flush bacteria off of your teeth. Less bacteria means lower risk of problems with your teeth and gums over the long term.
Enjoy your summer travels, and keep these guidelines in mind to keep your mouth in good shape.
