What are your Teeth Whitening Options?

Posted on 7/28/2015 by Truman Nielsen
A before and after picture of a patients teeth receiving a whitening treatment. If you woke up one day and decided you had enough with your discolored teeth, you might wonder what teeth whitening options you have. A quick look at the store will show you many options - which ones are safe and which aren't?

Because you are talking about the only set of teeth you will get in your lifetime, it is important to know what you are using and how it will affect you. The best step you can take is to consult with us before using anything. There are certain products that will not work well in certain situations. We can evaluate your mouth and tell you the best route to go in order to achieve the level of whiteness you desire.

Over-the-Counter Products
You can purchase over-the-counter whitening products on your own, but we caution you in doing so. These products typically contain two ingredients: carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide. The hydrogen peroxide is what bleaches your teeth.

The catch is that it cannot bleach all stains and can actually cause unsightly stains rather than whiter teeth. These ingredients can also cause tooth sensitivity or issues with your gums. This sensitivity typically goes away, but do you want to deal with them at all?

Dentist Prescribed Products

If you want to do the whitening process at home rather than in our office, there are many products that we can dispense to you. The benefit of getting the products from us is that they will have the ADA seal of approval. This means that you are lower risk for any type damage occurring to your teeth.

We will prescribe you the appropriate product, whether one with hydrogen peroxide; a gel that you brush onto your teeth; or one of the many other products at our disposal, depending on the exact condition of your mouth. This helps to ensure that the product will work and will not provide you with negative results.

Professional Teeth Whitening

For the fastest and most effective results, you can obtain professional teeth whitening right in our office. We have several methods at our disposal, allowing us to choose the one that will provide you with the greatest results. The process typically takes less than one hour and provides you with immediate results.

Of course, just like any other whitening process, the results do not last forever, if you want to keep your teeth white, you will have to have the procedure repeated every year or so.

Toothpaste for Minor Stains

If you have minor stains on your teeth and you catch them early, all that you may need is a whitening toothpaste that is approved by the ADA.

This toothpaste contains little scrubbers that work harder than standard toothpaste and eradicating the stains from your teeth. This type of toothpaste should not be used long-term, but can be a temporary solution to mildly discolored teeth.

We encourage you to talk to us about your teeth whitening options. We know the desire to have white teeth, but we want to ensure that your teeth stay pain-free and in good condition.

Before you put anything new in your mouth, you should consult with us just so we can tell you how it will affect your teeth. The last thing you want is for your teeth to look worse after trying to get them to look whiter!

Please call us today for an evaluation so that we can determine the best way to whiten your teeth. Remember that not all situations are able to be fixed with teeth whitening, sometimes dental veneers are the better option.
