The Many Ways to Fix a Chipped Tooth

Posted on 9/13/2015 by Truman Nielsen
A woman suffering from chipped teeth. The fear of going to the dentist keeps us from having simple things repaired such as a broken tooth. Like all coping mechanisms we tend to adapt by using different methods or ways to fix what is chipped.

We suggest that you come to our office immediately if you are dealing with any missing pieces of your teeth though. A cracked tooth can become infected and spread to other parts of your mouth. If it goes untreated you might end up losing your tooth.

Our services can help you to gain or regain your smile. Usually, it is a less likely coincidence that teeth are cracked or chipped due to serious trauma. Incidences like imminent danger to the face or head are just a few examples of serious injuries that most people don't experience. But for the average tooth incidents what are some ways to fix a chip tooth?

Fix the Chip

Repairing a broken tooth depends on how damaged it is. At our practice we will use a filling for your tooth or teeth if a small fraction has broken off. Using a colored composite resin and bonding agent helps mend cracked teeth. Although you can get a bonding agent over the counter it is only a temporary fix.

Another thing that goes along with bonding is enamel shaping. This is used when there are slight imperfections that a patient may want to have taken care of to improve their smile. Teeth that have a small chip could possibly be reshaped and smoothed out for a desirable look.

A dental crown is what we use when a larger piece of your tooth is missing. We will file down the tooth and cover it with a crown that closely resembles your tooth. In most cases it only takes two visits to have your tooth repaired. After the initial x-ray which we will check for any abnormal jaw structures or roots then we proceed.

When the chipped tooth is a little deeper than a patient expected, we treat this particular issue with a root canal. By removing the pulp and nerve we clean out the infected area and seal it up. Afterwards we place a crown on the tooth. This procedure is safe and painless under normal circumstances. Patients usually can resume their daily activities post-surgery.

Dental veneers come in handy when it comes to restoring your tooth. The veneers are an ultra-thin porcelain composite resin covering the teeth. This is the perfect remedy for the front teeth by hiding discoloration and giving your smile a brighter appearance in the process. Besides using this procedure for chipped teeth a patient can use this method cosmetically. For instance, if a client wants to fill in their gap between their teeth, dental veneers are a great choice.

Tooth Spot

A chipped tooth maybe inevitable sometimes, but it is preventable. By avoiding certain hard to chew foods, biting on ice, and opening up things with your teeth, patients will keep the chances of a cracked tooth low. The focus on oral health in general helps to preserve the patient's teeth. Maintaining a good oral hygiene regimen also lowers the chances of tooth decay.

The techniques used to fix a chip tooth when performed correctly, can last a long time. Our office specializes in doing it right the first time. With highly qualified individuals that make up our staff, assisting patients is second nature. If you are suffering from a missing piece to your tooth, please call us today. Let our professionals examine your tooth in order to bring back your smile.
