Teeth Whitening

Teeth WhiteningNo one wants to go through life with stained teeth. They can be embarrassing, causing you to suffer from poor self-esteem and even depression if you isolate yourself due to embarrassment. There is not one solid reason why certain people’s teeth become discolored. For some it is due to diminished enamel that occurs from normal wear and tear, age, and certain illnesses, while for others it is due to their lifestyle habits, such as smoking, eating acidic foods or drinking wine or coffee. The good news is that there is a simple solution to fix your stained teeth if they are on the exterior of your teeth - teeth whitening done right in our office.

A Simple Procedure

Teeth whitening done in the office is non-invasive and is completed in less than one hour. There is no anesthetic or recovery time; you can go on with your life immediately following the appointment.

The first step to teeth whitening, however, is an evaluation. We need to determine if your stains are able to be whitened, as not all stains are able to be fixed this way and will need a different procedure, such as dental veneers. This situation only occurs when there are stains on the inner layers of your enamel, and not on the outermost layer. Tooth whitening works with its abrasive materials to eat away at the enamel on the exterior of your teeth only.

Once we determine that your teeth will benefit from the teeth whitening process, we can get started. We first protect all of the areas of your mouth that are not getting whitened, such as your gums, cheeks, and tongue. Once those areas are protected, we apply a whitening gel to the teeth that need to be whitened. This gel, once activated, will begin to work its way through the stains on the exterior of your enamel. The gel is activated through the use of a special light that we apply to the area. Once we have reached the desired level of whiteness, your appointment is complete!

Caring for Whitened Teeth

Once you have whitened teeth, you will need to be careful with your oral hygiene habits as well as your diet. The results are not permanent, which means your teeth can stain again rather easily. Most patients have their teeth whitened once a year to keep up with the results. In addition, however, they follow these rules:

•  Brush your teeth at least twice a day. This will help to remove any food debris and bacteria that remains on the teeth which is responsible for staining your teeth. The more food that is left to sit, the more damage it does. This is especially true for acidic and sugary foods.
•  Watch your diet. If you eat an excessive amount of acidic foods your enamel will pay the price. Acid eats away at your enamel; when that outer layer is gone, it is like your layer of protection is gone. The inner layers stain much easier, which is what causes the unpleasant look that caused you to come for teeth whitening. In addition, dark sodas, coffee, and red wine should be consumed in moderation in order to minimize the risk of staining.
•  Drink plenty of water. No matter what you eat or drink, you should always consume plenty of water to wash away the harmful particles in your mouth. This will help in cases when you do consume acidic foods/drinks or have one of the offending drinks from above. The water will wash away the harmful particles; limiting the amount of damage those foods/drinks do to your teeth.
•  Stop smoking. This habit is bad for your teeth and your health. If you smoke, it does not do your teeth many benefits to have them whitened. Talk to us about ways to quit if you need help so that you can get your teeth back to the white appearance that you desire.

We are happy to discuss your options for teeth whitening in our office today! We encourage you not to use over-the-counter teeth whitening products as they typically do not have the desired results and can sometimes even cause more damage in your mouth. The procedure we perform in the office is quick and painless and can leave you with a beautiful, white smile in just 1 hour.
